The Nephites and Lamanites » Nephites Populate Polynesia

01

In 55 BC, a Nephite man named Hagoth built an extremely large ship and filled it with provisions. He and many Nephite families launched into the west sea. The next year the ship returned and he built more ships, filled them all with other Nephite families and provisions, and sailed off into the west sea. They did not return, and many supposed they had drowned at sea.

But they did not drown. Hagoth's ships reached the islands of the Pacific, and the Nephites on board his ships became the ancestors of many Polynesians including people on the islands of Hawaii and New Zealand. Even though Hagoth was a Nephite and the Polynesian people appear to be Lamanites, it is nonetheless the case that they are descended from Hagoth's people.
